About the Author

John Geary is a freelancer writer, photographer, editor and communicator. His professional background in journalism includes several years as both a freelance and salaried broadcaster, a weekly newspaper editor and daily newspaper sports editor/features writer. In 1999, he turned his talents to writing about his first love, the outdoors and all the adventures one can experience in them. His stories and photos about nature, conservation, the outdoors and travel have been published in Canoe & Kayak Magazine, Canoe Journal, Paddler, Wildlife Conservation, Family Camping, Airlines Magazine, Ski Canada's Outdoor Guide, Nature Canada, Mountain Life, Calgary Magazine, Where Calgary, Our Alberta, Synchronicity, Odyssey, the Wildlands Advocate, Coast, Business in Calgary, Calgary Outdoors, Voice of the Friends and Calgary Psittascene. Two of his stories appeared in the 2003 book, More of Canada's Best Canoe Routes.

His travels have taken him horseback riding in the Alberta Rockies, the Zimbabwe bushveldt and the Central American savanah; hot-air ballooning in the Serengeti; spelunking in Belize; sea kayaking in the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific; canoeing in five Canadian provinces; rafting in B.C. and Africa; kayaking and whitewater rafting in South America. and hiking through rainforests in Central and South America and Central Africa.
