Prior to becoming a freelance writer/photographer, I worked 15 years as a professional journalist in newspaper and radio.

Professional Newspaper Experience

    Barrhead Leader, May to October 1984 (Barrhead, Alberta)

As sports/features reporter, my duties and experiences included:

bullet

covering, photographing and writing up stories for all local sports events

bullet

photographing and writing up assigned pieces: including features and coverage of municipal government council meetings, chamber of commerce meetings, board of education meetings

bullet

development of film and prints for paper's photographs

bullet

editing, page design, layout and paste-up of three to four pages per issue

    Alaska Highway News, January 1990 to April 1998 (Fort St. John, B.C.)

As sports editor, my duties and experiences included:

covering, photographing and writing up stories for all local sports events

bullet

writing and providing photos for features in the arts and entertainment, lifestyles, food, and travel pages

bullet

editing, page design, layout and paste-up of three to four pages per day

bullet

working with local freelance columnists and reporters to enhance the paper's local flavor

recruiting columnists for interesting and regular additions to the paper's sports section

development of film and prints for paper's photographs

scanning and using of graphic images for use on pages

involving myself in community events, not just in providing coverage, but actually taking part in many charity fund-raising events

As news director (January to March 1989), my duties included:

hosting daily one-hour open line talk show, some shows with guests, some shows with no guests
