Journeys into nature ...

There is something about looking forward to the start of any journey that starts the blood to race. Often, the anticipation is as great as the journey itself; however, in the end, to paraphrase T. S. Eliot, it is the journey that matters most, not the destination.
Some forms of travel often leave the returning traveller more exhausted at the end of a trip than prior to leaving. However, journeys that involve connecting - or in many cases, reconnecting - with nature, be they weekend sojourns, months-long expeditions or exotic safaris, often have a soothing, revitalizing effect on one.
I find a greater peace in paddling a canoe down a slow, remote river; in walking along a lonely, deserted seacoast; in sitting by a cool pool of water in the forest, than in any other activity in my experience. I reconnect, I gain perspective, I rejuvenate my soul.
Featured on this site, and its partner site, (Journeys into nature: The Tropics) are accounts of my travels. Whether I travelled by foot or on horseback, by canoe or kayak, these journeys all contain the same thread: they helped me reconnect with some of the wildness that Henry David Thoreau called "the preservation of humanity."
Enjoy!
